It's My Party: Stumptown's Duane Sorenson
Released on 09/16/2013
I'm Duane Sorenson, founder of Stumptown Coffee.
This is Bon Appetit's, It's My Party.
I'm having some folks over for brunch today.
The first thing I focus on, it's always drinks
and it's always beverage.
I usually offer coffee and beer or a cocktail or whiskey.
What I put together, today's menu and the recipes
for the brunch today was food that I enjoy
and that my family enjoys and stuff that I cook at home.
A sausage frittata, I make it often.
Shucking oysters, I cook all sorts of food,
but a lot of inspiration
from all the traveling that I've done.
I was the coffee buyer for Stumptown for many, many years.
Seeing food from all over the world definitely
has influenced how I cook at home.
How I entertain at my condo is just folks
in different parts of the house.
You know, the kids are watching something in one room,
one of my buddies in my bedroom flippin' through my records,
and I've got buddies and guests in my living room
and we're talking or cooking food together.
So I'm a huge record collector.
I've got records stashed in every nook
and cranny of the house.
From honky tonk to alternative music to rock and roll.
So, you know, music at my coffee bars and my restaurants
have always been really important to me.
When I brew coffee at home, I generally do Chemex.
I love the cup, I love the flavor.
It's very clear, it's not muddy or murked down,
I have two or three pots of Chemex every morning
before I leave the house.
I love entertaining.
I love my people.
I love hospitality, I love taking care of people,
and it's often that we have people floating
in and out of the house from my kids, to their friends,
to my friends, to the folks that I work with.
